Peter Meechan is one of our most important composers. The reason why I say ‘our’ is because although Meechan’s writing to date has been mainly for brass and wind ensembles, he nonetheless is one of the contemporary composers who takes nothing about the heritage of Classical musical language for granted.
What is fascinating about Meechan’s work is that his voice is fully his own. That is to say his sources, influences and inspirations have been fully digested and transformed into his own language right from the beginning.
